The airport encounter

Following the trending airport encounter between Reno Omokri and His Excellency Peter Obi, let me state clearly that nobody has a problem with political opponents greeting each other. In every healthy democracy, opposition, criticism, and political debates are part of the process. That is what makes democracy active and competitive. Politics is not war.

However, the manner and intention surrounding the hypocritical greeting is what many Nigerians find displeasing and unsettling.

You cannot spend years falsely and constantly attacking, ridiculing, and attempting to downgrade a man’s integrity and reputation publicly, then suddenly approach him with a camera strategically positioned, disrespectfully placing your hands on the shoulder of a statesman of Mr. Peter Obi’s level, only to later rush to social media and turn the entire moment into political propaganda.

If the greeting was truly from a place of sincerity and maturity as some people now claim, the aftermath would have reflected that same maturity. A simple message appreciating peaceful political coexistence or acknowledging mutual respect despite political differences would have been enough.

Instead, the encounter was quickly converted into a political narrative about reelection and future political victories. That alone interpreted the action as calculated optics rather than genuine civility.

Regardless of the intentions behind the encounter, I must commend His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi for maintaining his composure and maturity throughout the moment. Even while fully aware of the political undertones and propaganda behind the staged greeting, he still responded calmly and respectfully. That is leadership and political maturity.

That level of restraint, discipline, and emotional intelligence is part of what continues to distinguish him in Nigeria’s political space.
