The Texas heavyweight who won world titles and later transformed into a television and pop culture icon played a major role in the history of boxing in the 1970s, which was marked by figures such as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, Variety reports.

In the 1990s, Foreman took advantage of affordable television airtime slots to promote his home grilling product, the “Foreman Grill,” through a series of infomercials in which he starred.

The famous boxer stated that he had received a divine calling in 1977, so he decided to temporarily retire from the boxing ring and return to studying Christianity devoutly.

He became an ordained minister in 1978 and began preaching in his hometown of Houston.

But he returned to the ring in 1987 and surprised many by regaining his heavyweight title in 1994. Foreman retired permanently from the ring in 1997.
