The Benue Blockade
On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Governor of Anambra State, was intercepted and blocked by a group of hostile youths in Makurdi, Benue State. The incident occurred around Gyado Villa along the Gboko Road, near the Nigerian Air Force Base and Makurdi Airport, effectively halting Obi’s scheduled humanitarian visit to local communities.
Purpose of the Visit
Obi’s trip to Benue State was intended as a humanitarian outreach rather than a political campaign rally. His primary objective was to travel to the Yelwata community in the state to sympathize with families and victims grieving from a deadly massacre that took place in June 2025. Following the disruption in Benue, Obi adjusted his itinerary and proceeded to Plateau State, where he visited displaced persons in the Mangu Local Government Area.
Government Defenses and Protocol Disagreements
In the wake of the incident, the Benue State Government firmly denied any involvement or prior knowledge of the blockade. Speaking on Channels Television, Benue State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Solomon Lorpev, and also denied that Governor Hyacinth Alia had not been officially notified of Obi’s visit.
Conversely, political figures like former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom condemned the blockade, labeling the obstruction inconsistent with democratic principles. Critics have alleged that a “permission structure” created by government rhetoric effectively enabled the hostility, pointing to recent official statements cautioning against “unapproved high-profile visits” to vulnerable displaced person camps.
Security Response and Police Arrests
The Benue State Police Command reacted swiftly to the rising tension. To prevent the situation from escalating into open violence, tactical teams intervened and securely escorted Obi back to the local airport. The State Police Commissioner later confirmed that several suspects linked to the blockade had been arrested, and active investigations are ongoing to uncover the political actors or entities responsible for organizing the disruption.
