Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has alleged international conspiracy aiding the provision of financial and military support to the notorious terrorist group, Boko Haram.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, General Musa expressed concerns about the group’s persistence, despite the Nigerian military’s efforts to defeat them.
General Musa pointed to evidence that many captured Boko Haram fighters were found with funds linked to powerful foreign nations, suggesting international complicity in supporting the group.Advertisement
He however called on the United Nations to investigate the sources of funding and training for Boko Haram militants.
“Over 120,000 Boko Haram members have surrendered, and many have been found with money from powerful foreign countries. Where are they getting this money? Who is training them? Who is supplying them with weapons?” General Musa asked, emphasizing the need for the international community to investigate the global funding networks that enable Boko Haram’s insurgency.
The Chief of Defence Staff also noted that Boko Haram has developed new strategies, including the use of drones for surveillance and targeting security forces.
He urged the United Nations to help identify those funding and arming the insurgents, expressing uncertainty about which countries might be sabotaging Nigeria’s security.
“The UN needs to come in because we need to trace the funding. It is an international flow, and we don’t have control over that,” he said.
Musa said he suspected an “international conspiracy,” questioning “how are they able to sustain themselves for 15 years? That is one question I think everybody should ask themselves.”
