Traditional rulers

By Comr. Okoye Kenechi
In a swift response to the letter from Hon. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC), His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka A. Achebe, the Obi Of Onitsha, has addressed the suspension of the traditional ruler of Neni, Igwe Damian O. Ezeani.

This action also includes a directive for the traditional rulers of Ojoto and Aguluezechukwu to publicly apologize to the Anambra state government for conferring a chieftaincy title without proper authorization.

The suspension, announced on January 7, 2024, stemmed from the conferment of a chieftaincy title upon Senator Ifeanyi Ubah by Igwe Damian O. Ezeani.
In his response, the Obi Of Onitsha conveyed concerns about the perceived dehumanization of the traditional institution by the Anambra state government. He emphasized that the livelihood of traditional rulers is not solely dependent on the one hundred and seventy-five thousand naira given to them monthly by the state government, nor is it contingent on chieftaincy titles.

The Obi Of Onitsha underscored the industrious nature of traditional rulers, highlighting that many have reached the pinnacle of their careers in academics, business, and professional endeavors. This perspective challenges the notion that financial remuneration or chieftaincy titles are the primary factors sustaining the livelihoods of these respected figures.

The unfolding events bring to the forefront a broader discussion on the role of traditional institutions in Anambra state and the delicate balance between governmental oversight and the autonomy of these revered cultural entities. As the dialogue continues, it remains to be seen how this clash of perspectives will impact the dynamics between the state government
